Head Teacher's Welcome
On behalf of the Governors, staff and children here at Wooodthorpe J.I School, we would like to welcome you and thank you for visiting our website.
Our school is a one form entry school in the heart of Kings Heath. We work closely together with other schools, services and organisations (both locally and globally) and our parents and carers, to ensure that children in our school receive the best educational outcomes and experiences possible in their learning and personal development. Pupil and staff wellbeing is at the heart of everything we do; we understand the importance of good mental and physical health.
Our school motto is ‘Learn, Play and Grow Together’ which underpins our goal for our children to be the very best they can be. Relationships, attitudes, and behaviour are very positive and ethos exists in which learning together becomes an enjoyable and fulfilling experience for all of them. As a Rights Respecting School, we pride ourselves on our warm and friendly atmosphere and hope that new parents and children will quickly feel part of our school community.
We have high aspirations for all of our children and have developed a curriculum that supports the needs of all our children. It is important to us that the children are happy, confident, resilient and enjoy their learning; making the most of all the opportunities we have to offer. Children have the opportunity to take leadership roles within the school, including: Pupil Council, Ambassadors for Sports and Rights Respecting, Digital Leaders (Online Safety) Eco-Team, Librarians, Junior PCSOs. Our older children are mentors and peer mediators and fulfil a range of roles and responsibilities as role models in school.
We ensure that all learning is purposeful and linked to children`s own experiences wherever possible, so they are motivated, engaged, challenged and become highly effective problem solvers and communicators. Our curriculum prioritises reading; it is creative, inclusive and exciting. It provides children with a broad range of learning experiences which seek to nurture talents, deepen subject knowledge and acquire new skills in an engaging way. It is our aim for all children to have the right values and character to be successful, gain a deeper understanding of the world around them so that they become responsible and caring citizens of the future. We hope that during their time with us, your children will become confident, effective learners with good self-esteem who are aspirational, articulate and inquisitive.
Learning at Woodthorpe School takes place both inside and outside the classroom. There is a wide range of educational visits planned in all year groups including two residentials throughout the juniors. We are fortunate to have a wonderful Forest School which we also use for learning beyond the classroom. We highly value our partnership with parents which is fundamental in achieving the very best provision for every child.
Our website is your first opportunity to find out lots of information about our school but, we would love you to visit us if you are thinking of choosing our school for your child's setting, to experience the school environment and ethos for yourselves. Simply contact our school office to make an appointment.
I am incredibly privileged to be the Headteacher of Woodthorpe J.I School. The staff and I aim to make each child’s experience of school exciting and enriching so that they develop a life-long love of learning.
We look forward to welcoming you to our school.
Ms L. McGrath
