Special Educational Needs


At Woodthorpe we believe that all children have the right to feel safe, valued and succeed. Our provision is based on meeting the individual needs of each child in order to reach their potential. We are fully inclusive, making learning accessible and challenging. We want our children to develop the ability to make friendships, build confidence and have an 'I can' attitude. All of our staff encourage and promote independence so that our children develop a love of learning.

What can you expect at Woodthorpe Junior and Infant School if your child has special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND)?


At Woodthorpe we are here to equip every child with the skills they need to be a successful learner and responsible citizen. We embrace the fact that every child is different and help and support their individual need(s) within the mainstream classroom environment where at all possible.
What can we offer children with SEND?
We aim to integrate all children into the school community: primarily a Woodthorpe Junior and Infant School classroom. We recognise the strengths of each child and the valuable contribution that each makes. Meeting the child's needs is the responsibility of the teacher supported by the SENCo and additional support staff. Every teacher is a teacher of SEN and the child's needs are best met in the classroom environment, amongst peers, by adapting class work and having appropriate levels of support if required.

Access to Education
Access to Education consists of four specialist services:  Communication & Autism (CAT), Educational Psychology (EPS), Pupil and School Support (PSS) and Sensory Support (SS), who work in an integrated way to ensure schools and settings receive services of the highest quality in order that they can support children and young people with additional educational needs.  We also work in partnership with Early Support Service (ESS), the Physical Disability Support Service (PDSS), the Looked After Children’s Education Services (LACES) and Special Educational Needs Assessment Review team (SENAR) so you will also find useful information and links for these services.
